Cabell here thanks Van Doren, editor of The Nation, for his reviews of Cabell's Figures of Earth, The Silver Stallion, and Barren Ground; mentions revisions he is working on for Chivalry and The Line of Love; and discusses a proposed introduction by Van Doren to a re-issued edition of Jurgen. The introduction was rejected by the publishers. Cabell sends F. Scott Fitzgerald a copy of Jurgen and praises Fitzgerald's This Side of Paradise. Also included in the collection are two portraits of Cabell.

Richmond author James Branch Cabell (1879-1958) is best known for his controversial book, Jurgen (1919), a fantasy set in Cabell's mythical medieval world of Poictesme (pronounced Pwa-tem). The New York Society for the Suppression of Vice contended the book was obscene. A trial over its content brought the reclusive writer national fame. F. Scott Fitzgerald was born Sept. 24, 1896 in St. Paul Minnesota. He began writing while a student at Princeton University. He met his wife, Zelda, while serving in the US Army stationed in Alabama. His novel, This Side of Paradise, was published in 1920 and he became an instant success. He published he Great Gatsby in 1925. Fitzgerald died on December 21, 1940 of a heart attack at age 44 while living in Los Angeles and working for the film industry....
